PART TWO

2.1 Didactic activity and scientific researh.

The publication of the volume L’Italie dans la vie et dans l’oeuvre de George Sand ( Paris, A. Colin, 1960 ) represented a fundamental step in the studies of A.P. . it contained all the findings she had gathered up to that moment during long years of research on the work and life of the French writer and, whilst some of the material had already appared in articles and essays, the attention with which the book was received, prompted A.P. to pursue investigations with further researches in Italian, French and British Archives.

Soon, a second volume, complementary to the first one, was sent to the press: George Sand vue par les Italiens ( Sansoni-Didier, 1965 ) in which A.P. underlines the importance of the french novelist’s influence on 19th century Italian social life and literary trends.

During the same years, A.P. reproposed a critical re-evaluation of Pierre Corneille’s last tragedies, works which had been quite neglected by most scholars. She then started an accurated philological analysis of French poet Gabriel Du Bois-Hus, whose book, La Nuict des Nuicts, was published ( Bologna, Patron Ed., 1967) with an extensive introduction in which A.P. highlights the originality of the artist considered one of the most unique representatives of 17th century French baroque literature. The volume is prefaced by Jean Rousset.

Back to 19th century preoccupations, A.P. began inquiries into the influence of Baudelaire on Guy de Maupassant. She completed a comparative study and the essay Influenza di Baudelaire su Maupassant, pointing out overlooked aspects of the French auctor, appeared on Revue Europe in June 1969.

Investigations into the writings of George Sand were later resumed to clarify a problematic moment in the life and thought of the French novelist: the years of the French-Prussian War (1870) and of the French Comune.

A.P. tackled social thematics of those days, enlighting a period particularly delicate for the French nation. The volume George Sand et les années terribles ( Patron-Nizet, 1975) gave a remarkable contribution to the comprehension of historic events by presenting for the first time many unpublished Sand’s writings, including her Agendas, whose documentary value is priceless since to their pages the novelist has enstrusted most secret confessions on the rôle of the artist and of the intellectual confronted with the political turmoils of her time.

The reconstruction of La Querelle - brought about amogst Italian patriots by Sand’s novel La Daniella - marks the beginning of A.P.’s new work: a critical edition of La Daniella ( Bulzoni, 1977, and later Les éditions de l’Aurore, 1992) and the conditions of 1885 Rome. A personal critical perspective of George Sand’s activity was thus put into focus thanks to the new interpretative dimension of her writings. A.P.’s publications gave Sandian studies a strong impact and whilst the French novelist has since known a renewed interest both in Europe and in the USA, many hasty verdicts predicting the author and her work destined to oblivion, have been revised.

In 1980, A.P. began a sistematic research in the archives of the Vittoriale degli Italiani at Gardone, Lake Garda. the unpublished correspondence between Gabriele D’Annunzio and his French contacts, offered some lucky discoveries and became the object of in-depth studies. The results appeared as follows:

1. "Le Ricochet": Un moment français dans la vieillesse de Gabriele D’Annunzio (with unpublished writings) in Présences françaises dans la Vénétie, (C.I.R.V.I., Biblioteca del viaggio in Italia, no.1; Genève, Slatkine, 1980).

2. Paul Valéry: dernier grand lien d’amitié littéraire de Gabriele D’Annunzio, Acts of 8th International Meeting of Società Universitaria per gli Studi di Lingua e Letteratura francese in the Aosta Valley, (Schena, 1986).

3. Gabriele D’Annunzio e Robert de Montesquiou: un’amicizia attraverso pagine di letteratura (with unpublished writings), in D’Annunzio in Francia, special issue of Berenice (Roma, Lucarini, nos. 28-29, March-July 1989).

4. La corrispondenza inedita tra D’Annunzio e Marie de Régnier, conference held in Torri del Benaco, Lake Garda, May 1994.

Findings from further reserches carried out by graduating and postgraduating students became the subject of doctoral theses on D’Annunzio and the French culture.

In a subsequent phase of her work and as a member of Centre de Recherche sur l’Imaginaire, University of Grenoble, A.P. has oriented her interests towards the issue of Immaginario. To thoroughly investigate such topic, in 1988 A.P. organized a Meeting at the University of Verona on Viaggio iniziatico e viaggio immaginario. Representatives from the cultural and academic world attended and presented their contributions.

Later with the cooperation of Società Italiana di Comparatistica Letteraria (S.I.C.L.) and of Associazione Italiana di Cultura Classica (A.I.C.C.) A.P. organized other two Meetings at Società Letteraria, Verona: Miti e mitologie letterarie (1990),

and Eroe e personaggio dal mito alla dissoluzione novecentesca (1992).

°°°°

A.P. is a Member of the Board of Directors of C.I.R.V.I. (Centro Interuniversitario di Ricerca sul Viaggio in Italia), since its foundation (1977). she regularly cooperates with C.I.R.V.I.’s Director, Emanuele Kanceff of Turin University, to cast full light on all aspects of the journey to Italy (Letteratura di viaggio e viaggio reale) and its history, with the aim to evince the cultural connections such travels brought about through the centuries.

With this goal in mind, together with C.I.R.V.I. and the University of Verona, A.P. organized several Internatonal Congresses and presently supervises the preparation of Tesi di laurea and of Dottorato di ricerca intending to present critical editions of unpublished texts on the journey to Italy. In 1981, Biblioteca C.I.R.V.I. was thus able to send to the press its first volume, Coup d’oeil sentimental critique et historique sur Venise (1805), an unpublished manuscript by Sergent Marceau, with introduction and notes by Nerema Zuffi, University of Verona.

In 1992, A.P. founded C.R.I.E.R. (Centro di Ricerche sull’Italia nell’Europa Romantica), within the French Institute, Faculty of Foreign Languages and Literatures, University of Verona. The Center began its activity with a joint research at national level on L’immaginario romantico nel quadro europeo. All contributions appeared in the first Quaderno C.R.I.E.R. (Ed. C.I.R.V.I., 1996). The second Quaderno C.R.I.E.R., Per una definizione di Romanticismo Europeo, was published in 1997; the third will appeared at the end of 1999.

Always in 1992, A.P. carried out a research on Tesi di laurea and Dottorato di ricerca, concentrating on Romantic Period (1800-1850), discussed in Italian Universities. An important C.R.I.E.R.’s finality is to encourage graduating students to complete in-depth researches on Romanticism.

C.R.I.E.R.’s first Meeting, L’Italia nell’Europa romantica (1993), saw the participation of the most illustrious European scholars of Romantic Studies. Acts of Meeting appeared in 1995, in two volumes, Ed. C.I.R.V.I.

The second C.R.I.E.R. Meeting, Risonanze classiche nell’Europa Romantica (1996), further widened the field of investigation to new aspects of European Romantic Period thanks to the contributions presented by several specialists from European and International Universities. Acts of Meeting appeared in 1997, two volumes.

In 1998, A.P. organized the third International Meeting on Riflessi europei sull’Italia Romantica. Acts of Meeting appeared in two volumes in 1999.
